When we encounter
King David in the Bible we find both a life story that is compelling and
prayers that are deeply moving. In our next study, we want to bring together
the stories of David found in Samuel and Kings with the prayers of David found
in the Psalms. Join us as we engage with David’s life to grab a hold of God’s
promises for us today, even as God promised them to David. Below are listed
our first 8 sessions based on the order of David’s story in the Bible.
Our Goal:
ØSimply learn or re-acquaint
ourselves with what the Bible tells us about King David.
ØImmerse ourselves in scripture we
may or may not have read before.
ØLearn about ourselves and how God
works in our lives.

Session
#1Chosen
at the Core
Text: 1 Samuel 16 (David Anointed by Samuel)
& Psalm 101 Description: As we see God’s criteria for choosing David as the new king,
we might want to consider the question: ‘Would God choose
my heart?’
Session #2God
on Our Side
Text: 1 Samuel 17 (David Fights Goliath) & Psalm 2
Description: David astounded people with his battle with and victory over
Goliath. God was clearly on his side in the battle.
For us today, what does it mean to have confidence in
God and stand up for what is right, without being overconfident
and cocky in our belief that God is on our side?
Session #3 Troubling Times
Text: 1 Samuel 18-19 (Saul turns on David and
Tries to Kill Him) & Ps. 57
Description: David was victorious and well-liked, but he quickly
experienced difficult times as Saul turned against him and tried to kill
him, forcing him to flee. How might we look to God with a good attitude
and praise him in the midst of difficult times and troubles?
Session #4 Playing Out Your Heart
Text: 1 Samuel 16:14-23 (David Playing for Saul)
& Psalm 34 Description: David did his best with his abilities before God in the
service of Saul. What does it look like to do our best for God with the
abilities he has given us today—even when not it positive situations?
Session
#5 Friendship at its Best
Text: 1 Samuel 20 (David and Jonathan) &
Psalm 133 Description: David and Jonathan had a friendship that was deep and
rewarding. We all need friends in our lives who we care for and who
care for us. How might we learn from David and Jonathan’s friendship about
friendship at its best?
Session #6 A View from the Top
Text: 2 Samuel 1-2:7 (David laments Saul’s death
and crowned king) & Ps. 18 Description: David rose up from the role of a shepherd boy to the place
of king by steady faithfulness. What can we learn about ‘success’ as a
pursuit in the God-ward life from David’s life?
Session #7 Temptation
and Escape
Text: 2 Samuel 11-12 (David and Bathsheba) & Psalm 141 Description: David struggled with temptation in his life many times, but
at this point he gave in. When we face temptation, how can we gather
lessons from the life of David about moving through them to escape and
victory?
Session #8 Protection
Text: 2 Samuel 11-12 (David and Uriah) &
Psalm 33 Description: God protected David throughout his life, but God didn’t
protect Uriah the Hittite when David unjustly had him killed. What does
God’s protection mean for us today? Why are there times when he
protects us and other times when we suffer?
