Mission Supper to Benefit P.E.T.-Kansas

INMAN – Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church , rural Inman, scheduled its annual Mission Supper from 5 to 7pm on Saturday, October 17.   Proceeds will benefit, P.E.T.-Kansas, based in Moundridge.  For a free will donation, diners will be served baked sausage, mashed potatoes, creamed peas, applesauce, rolls and homemade pie.  All are invited and bring a friend!

Worldwide, millions have been disabled by landmines, accidents or diseases such as polio.  Between landmines and polio, P.E.T.-Kansas estimates that over 23 million people have lost the ability to walk.  P.E.T.-Kansas provides the gift of mobility to persons who have lost the use of their legs.  P.E.T-Kansas is a faith-based, volunteer driven, non-profit organization that makes and distributes the P.E.T. ( P ersonal E nergy T ransportation) vehicle.

The P.E.T. vehicle is powered by a simple and innovative hand crank system.  The P.E.T. has been extensively field tested and is designed to be:

  • STURDY , in order to provide services for the rider for many years,
  • SIMPLE , to be easily maintained in outpost conditions,
  • LOW-COST , so the donor dollar can serve as many as possible—the material costs for one PET is $250.

The idea for P.E.T.-Kansas started in the summer of 2004 when P.E.T.-International co-founder Larry Hills visited his friend Kirby Goering in Moundridge.  Goering set up the tenth P.E.T. Project affiliation shop at 320 W. Ruth Street, Moundridge.  The shop is equipped with the machines and templates needed to manufacture and ship P.E.T.s.  Since September 2005, P.E.T.—KS has manufactured hundreds of P.E.Ts, shipping them to 65 different countries.  For more information check out their website at www.petinternational.org

Kirby Goering is scheduled to speak at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church on Sunday, October 4 (10:30am).  He will describe the mission and share stories of lives that have been changed and blessed by P.E.T.  as a way to lead up to the Mission Supper on October 17.   All are welcome to attend both events.

Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church is located at 43 13th Avenue, or 5 miles east and 3.5 miles south of Inman; 14 miles west 2.5 miles north of Hesston; 12 miles south, 1 mile west and .5 mile south of McPherson; or 5 miles east and 2.5 miles north of Buhler.  For more information contact the church office at 620.585.6733 or www.viewofhope.org.

Sausage Supper to Benefit “Bridges Out of Poverty/Circles™ Campaign

INMAN – Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church , rural Inman, will host its annual Mission Supper from 5 to 7pm on Saturday, October 25, 2008 .   Proceeds will benefit the Bridges Out of Poverty/Circles™ Campaign a ministry of Peace Connections, Newton , KS .  For a free will donation, diners will be served baked sausage, mashed potatoes, creamed peas, applesauce, rolls and homemade pie.  All are invited and bring a friend!

Poverty is more than a lack of money; it is a lack of resources in several areas, including emotional, mental, spiritual, physical, support systems, relationships and role models, and knowledge of the hidden rules of the community. Developed by Dr. Ruby K. Payne, Bridges Out of Poverty provides information, case studies, exercises and discussion topics. While most people do not consider themselves "rich" or "poor," there are distinct behavioral differences and that those behaviors are logical and necessary for survival. By understanding the drive to survive, seemingly irrational behaviors can be addressed. Cycles of poverty can be broken when barriers to learning are identified.

The Circles™ Campaign is a local community application of the Bridges Out of Poverty principles.  A Circle is comprised of a local family working to get out of poverty and two to four community allies, people who are willing to befriend the family and support their way out of poverty.   The mission of the Circles™ Campaign is to transform communities by building relationships that inspire and equip people to end poverty. The vision of the Circles™ Campaign is: Everyone in America has reasons, relationships and resources to thrive.

$500 trains one family of our local community in developing the resources necessary for self-sufficiency and family stability. “I am excited about this project,” said Mission Supper Committee member Hannah Neufeld, “because the money raised goes to supporting relationships and education, which addresses directly the issues related to generational poverty in our local communities.”
